What’s your favourite city in the world?

Amiens in Northern France

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Talk to locals. They are the friendliest people you can find in the whole country. They’ll tell you the best places to visit. It’s a dream city which has canals like Venice and Amsterdam with great history. The only difference is it’s less touristy than most places. One must-visit site is the Amiens Cathedral, which is the tallest and largest cathedral in France. It’s so big that it can fit two Notre Dam Paris cathedrals.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Local craft beer is a must try

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Amsterdam

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Roam the streets, even the narrow lanes. The way the narrow houses are set against the calm waters on the canal, the different-coloured bicycles parked beside the canal rails and the criss-cross of the bridges all form a kind of chaotic mess. There is beauty in every corner.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? There are so many local unique food to try when you're in Amsterdam. The best thing is, they are mostly street food so they can be found in abundance and cheaply. Stroopwafel, cheese, poffertjes and herring are but some of the local delights!

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? To take a walk along the canals of Amsterdam. It is one of the most relaxing things you can do when you get there, plus this serve two additional purpose: 1.this will help you figure out where the different attractions are in the city and 2. help you to discover hidden gems such as antiques shops or breakfast spots that might only be known by locals and will not be in your lonely planets guide.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Amsterdam (for women travelers)

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Order a 72 hour iAmsterdam.com City Card before you travel. This pass, bought online, is an excellent bargain for a short visit to the city, covering a great cross-section of the best sites and providing free transport between them. I checked on the freebies and discounts provided and then planned my week so that I did those things in three consecutive days. This way I got the best savings and bang for my buck.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Rijsttafel is a Dutch word for an Indonesian food specialty that means rice table. The connection to Holland? Between 1800 and 1949, Indonesia was a colony of The Netherlands and this kind of meal is a connection to that past. It consists of white rice plus many, many small servings of traditional foods designed to be shared. Each time I'm in Holland I have this meal at least once. Some of my favorite tastes are the grilled satays (chicken, beef or pork) served on skewers and gado gado, a mix of veggies served in peanut sauce. This is definitely a test tasting treat which invariably inspires conversation around other 'foods of the world'. Recommended choices are Sama Sebo , one of the oldest restaurants in Amsterdam and Puri Mas. Budget Tip: Sama Sebo offers a set lunch menu that is less expensive than its dinner counterpart.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? One of my favorite traditional Greek foods is moussaka, a dish made with egg plant, potatoes, minced meat and topped with a creamy sauce. Regarding drinks I suggest either Greek wine or beer from a microbrewery.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Bamberg (Germany)

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Stroll around the medieval UNESCO-awarded Old Town with all its narrow lanes and beautiful half-timbered houses. Afterwards experience the local Franconian culture by having a beer on "Untere Brücke", a popular meeting point for the town's cheerful students.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? You have to taste some of the local beer. Bamberg has 10 independent breweries located in the Old Town. What you can find here are unique beer styles, such as a smoked beer or cellar beer. These beers go well with some hearty German food, such as pork knuckle or sausages.

Barcelona

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? I was blown away by Barcelona when I visited a few years ago. I really only had 36 hours to explore at the time but it set in motion a lasting desire to return. The architecture of the buildings, many of which is designed by creative genius Antoni Gaudi are like nothing I've ever seen. From the yet unfinished Sagrada Familia cathedral and Casa Mila (both of which featured heavily in Dan Brown's book, Origin) to an entire park with Gaudi's fingerprints all over it: Park Güell, the city reveals a little more about its unique character and flvaour with every turn.

Maggie Turansky

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Belgrade, Serbia

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? It’s always hard to narrow down only one thing, however, visitors to Belgrade should make sure they head to Kalemegdan Park and the Belgrade Fortress. Not only is this one of the most interesting tourist sites in the city with historical remnants to explore but it is also a favourite hangout spot for locals. This makes it a fantastic place to enjoy a couple of drinks while gazing at the amazing view of the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers and rest of the Serbian capital.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Without a doubt, you can’t leave Belgrade without trying rakija – the national drink of Serbia! This (typically home-brewed) spirit is made from local fruits, most commonly plums, and is drunk as a sign of welcome or celebration in Belgrade. Make sure to pace yourself, however, as the brandy can sometimes exceed 60% alcohol by volume!

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Berlin

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Take a long stroll late afternoon to sunset along the Spree River from Jannowitzbrüke U-bahn station past the historic Mühlen-damm locks, Museum Island and to Monbijou-park (keep walking if you want). In one short walk you will experience Berlin at its best with beer gardens, cafes, museums, and incredible light playing on the architecture. The famous Fernsehturm Television Tower at Alexanderplatz will loom over you along the way.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Berlin offers an addicting restaurant scene with any international or trendy cuisine you may desire. But in keeping with its gritty, artistic ways, Berlin has a superior street food market scene. The Turkish Market, Markthalle Neun, Thai Wiese, and Winterfeldtplatz Market are four to experience.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Berlin, Germany

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Rent a bicycle for the day and explore some different neighborhoods, parks and just experience the vastness and diversity of the city. For usual suspects, we recommend the East Side Gallery where you can see over 2km of the Berlin Wall that has been turned into an outdoor art gallery. Then, take some time to ride through Mitte and the Museum Island (UNESCO) and down Under den Linden towards Brandenburg Gate. Nearby you can find the Holocaust Memorial and the Bundestag (Parliament building). As for easy neighborhoods to explore, we recommend Kreuzberg and Neukölln.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? There are two main things that people should try when they visit Berlin: the döner kebab and currywurst. The first dish exemplifies Berlin’s large Turkish population and its overall diversity. The latter is a twist on the ordinary wurst (grilled sausage), but includes ketchup with curry powder. What goes well with both: beer. In addition to traditional German beers there’s a growing craft beer scene in Berlin. Beyond that, the Turkish food and Middle Eastern cuisine scene in town is outstanding!

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Bordeaux, France

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Jennifer Dombrowski and Tim Davis, the duo behind Luxe Adventure Traveler, say their favorite city in the world is Bordeaux, France. In fact, they loved it so much after their first visit that they decided to move to Bordeaux and make the city their adopted home. As locals that have lived there for more than two years now, they recommend that the number one thing people do when they arrive to Bordeaux is visit La Cité du Vin. More than just a museum, it's an interactive experience that takes you through the history of wine making and the greatest wine destinations of the world. It's the perfect place to truly begin an appreciation for not only Bordeaux wines, but the wines of the world.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? People obviously know about Bordeaux wine, but not many realize that one of the world's most expensive sweet wines is also produced in the Bordeaux wine region. You should really try a glass of Sauternes while in Bordeaux, which is excellent with Roquefort cheese.

Throughout our travels, we’ve visited plenty of amazing cities but one city that will always be close to our hearts is Budapest. What’s your favourite city in the world?

Cluj-Napoca

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? The #1 thing I recommend when you're in Cluj is to go visit the Salina Turda ("Salt Mines"). The Salt Mines is in another town, Turda, but it's a short bus ride from Cluj. The mines have been in use since the Roman times and were converted into a theme park - yes, a subterranean theme park! The underground theme park feels very eerie and looks like it was plucked out of an Alien Movie. It is definitely one of the most unique things to see and do in the Cluj area.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? When in Cluj-Napoca you have to try the Sarmarle, which is cabbage that is stuffed and rolled with meat. Sometimes it's also wrapped around with bacon and simmered in bacon sauce. It's a traditional dish that popular in Eastern Europe with different names, but it's particularly good in Cluj-Napoca.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Cologne

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Cologne is always worth to visit, but especially during the 5th season in the year... Carnival. :-) The Cologne carnival (Germany) is an amazing tradition and a very cool travel experience. It’s one of the best street carnivals of the world. Special is that 95% of the people are dressed up, not like elsewhere where only the parade is in a costume. The whole city goes crazy and parties inside and outside. You will feel part of it very quickly, also as a tourist. People are very open and welcoming, inviting you for drinks and a good time together.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Typical Cologne beer is called "Kölsch" and served in bars around town in small glasses, called "Stangen", of 0.2l. That way the beer is always fresh and cold. There is a whole tradition around the Kölsch itself. The best way t experience it, is at the breweries itself, which you find all over the city.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Denmark is famous for hygge - this is where you basically have down time. Coffee and a cake catching up with a good friend. What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? In any city or country, it's so important to take in local culture so sitting down at an authentic, non touristy, restaurant is the best place to get your cuisine culture on. If you need help in finding that, ask a local or the concierge!

I've been to Turkey a couple of times and I've never tired of the food because it's loaded with flavour and the mind boggling array of dishes available to eat.

There's no shortage of amazing attractions in Istanbul, but the number one thing to do when you arrive is to head out to Sultanahmet and visit the Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque. Krakow

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? The number one thing to do in Krakow is to immerse yourself in 'Rynek' (a square in the town centre). Here you can eat at a restaurant that opened its doors in 1364, tour an underground museum, head down an alleyway to find a hip bar for a drink, or you can simply admire the beautiful architecture around the square and learn about the altarpiece and hourly trumpet players of St Mary's Basilica. What’s your favourite city in the world?

Krakow, Poland

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? I think one of the first stops travelers should make is an evening in Kazimierz (the old Jewish district). It's not as picturesque as the main square, but this is where the locals hang out. If you buy a round of drinks -- which is super cheap! -- you'll make new friends and get immediate insider tips for the rest of your trip. There's also incredible history and delicious restaurants so you won't want to miss it.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Polish food is rich, heavy, and comes in huge portions so it can be hard to try everything. At least once, save room for dessert. Racuchy is a traditional, puffy "pancake" stuffed with cooked apples and dusted with powdered sugar. Many restaurants offer it, but I like it at Miód Malina. They have lovely, folksy decor and serve their racuchy with vanilla sauce. Yum!

Lincoln

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Lincoln is such a beautiful city with old and new combining to make for such an interesting place to visit. There is more than just a days worth of things to do there and staying over is certainly a good idea. There is the Brayford Waterfront with river cruises, a modern cinema and restaurants. Then to the right of this you will find the shops. If you start heading up the hill there are theatres and museums. If you can manage the walk why not give it a go walking up Steep hill one of the steepest and most historic roads in the UK. Once at the top you will find the oldest and most attractive parts of the town with the stunning Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln castle. Both more than worth a visit. There's also plenty of places to stop for a coffee and cake on the way up the hill. If you don't fancy walking back down they have a tourist bus that stops at various places around the city. Also in this area is the Museum of Lincolnshire life which is free to visit and one of my favourite museums.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Lincolnshire is famous for it's sausages so why not stop and eat somewhere that serves them. There's also a fabulous place selling homemade Ice-Cream up near the Cathedral.

London

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? The number one thing I recommend to people visiting London is to try a Sunday roast. It`s a tradition on Sunday to sit down for a big plate of roast meat with vegetables and a Yorkshire pudding. Add a pint of ale and you have the perfect English afternoon. London is a very international city and you can visit without ever really experiencing anything truly British. Indulging in a Sunday roast is a great way to experience a tiny slice of British culture.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Aside from the roast, I recommend having afternoon tea (there are great scones in London) and a gin tonic or two. London is crazy about gin.

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? My favourite city in the world is London. I visited London for the first time when I was 16 and very much in love with the music and the pop culture. I must say it was love on first sight. The city constantly re-invents itself, and there are so many different things to do that everybody will find their own little place that they will enjoy. If you haven’t been yet, I suggest you pay the ticket to get up The Shard. We went up there about an hour before sunset, and seeing the light and the colours of the city change was just magical. I probably spent a good half an hour just watching the trains leave London Bridge Station.

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? I know it’s sometimes quicker and easier to take the underground trains (the “tube”) but using their bus system is a great way to see more, especially on the upper deck! You will discover so many quaint neighborhoods in London to explore and the Royal Parks offer lovely green spaces that make you feel very far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If the weather is nice, I would visit them all! Holland Park, Hyde Park, and Richmond Park are my favorites.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? London’s restaurant scene is booming and there are SO many classic British and international restaurants to choose from these days. Definitely try Indian food when you're in London. Also keep in mind that most pubs serve up incredible British comfort food, they're not just a place to grab a drink. I'd recommend having a Sunday roast at the Windsor Castle pub in Notting Hill. I'd also highly recommend taking a food tour! There's so many to choose from in different London neighborhoods and they offer great variety.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Madrid

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? I grew up in Madrid and it's synonymous with two things: food and art. The must-see high art triumvirate includes the Prado, of course, the Reina Sofia (Picasso's Guernica) and the Thyssen. But there's so much more, from the smaller museums (the Sorolla) to the art galleries (Caixa Forum and many smaller ones throughout town). Madrid's art is also outdoors: view its classical statuary in the middle of squares and streets and even on top of buildings, or its vibrant and energetic street art scene in the Malasaña neighborhood or on the walls of the Tabacalera, the former tobacco factory.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Tapas. And more tapas. Going out for tapas is a national pastime and often eliminates the need for dinner. A good bar will serve both classic tapas (tortilla, croquetas) and innovative or even fusion concoctions (marrying roe, foie gras and scallops, for example). My favorite tapas neighborhoods (barrios) are around the Puerta del Sol and in the Mercado San Miguel (not far from Sol), La Latina, Plaza Santa Ana, and for an offbeat working-class neighborhood that few tourists ever find, try Tetuán, so traditional that some bars (fewer each day) still offer free tapas with your drink.

If you love culture, history and food then you will love Nottingham!

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Nottingham's curry houses have won many national awards over the years so if you love a good curry then you'll really have a hard time choosing between Mem Saab and the Calcutta Club. Or Annies Burger Shack for one of her 30 different varieties of burger - my favourite is The Elvis; a burger with peanut butter and jam, mmmm. What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Paris offers visitors many layers and ways to experience it; repeat visits are a must. Then keep on strolling west, stopping along the way to admire beautiful architecture, such as the exterior of the Louvre, or gorgeous parks, such as Tuileries. Keep on walking long enough and you'll finish up at the base of the Eiffel Tower, perhaps in time for sunset.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Paris

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? While Paris might be “a cliché” in terms of favorite cities, I haven’t really found another city to steal that top spot in my heart. And while taking a stroll on Champs Elise, go up the Eiffel Tower or enjoy the spectacular art in Louvre are mandatory, my favorite thing to do in Paris is to stroll around Montmartre, camera in hand. As a traveler I don’t only enjoy experiencing new places, but I also love rediscovering places I’ve already visited. And I feel Montmartre offers you that great rediscovering experience, be it people watching, photogenic street corners, panoramic views or beautiful sunsets.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? When in France you cannot go without having some amazing fresh pastry like croissants and pain au chocolat. French cuisine is indeed a bit fancy from my point of view, but when visiting Paris, I highly recommend grabbing a fresh baguette from a typical boutique with some delicious jambon and enjoy that on the banks of Siene. Of course don't miss the wine and the cheeses. It can't get better than that!

Move onto bigger tapas like filling 'tortilla' made with eggs and potatoes, or shrimp drenched in garlic.

Tallinn

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Tallinn is a beautiful ancient city with a lot to offer for your eyes. Just stroll around the medieval streets, especially the view from Kohtu Viewpoint on the city walls. Get spooked by the creepy statues at the Danish King’s Garden and enjoy the beauty of the Saint Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Once you have seen the highlights, go back to the Town Hall Square called Raekoda to enjoy a nice beer and enjoy your surroundings.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Valencia

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? I have been to, and lived in, so many cities all over the world that it’s almost impossible to pick a favorite. But, at the moment, I would say Valencia, on the east coast of Spain, is definitely one of my favorite cities. If you ever visit Valencia you have to check out the City of Arts and Sciences (Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias) which is located in the beautiful Turia Park. And I recommend just walking around Valencia’s historic center with its narrow alleyways, historic buildings, impressive churches and lively plazas. Lastly, you can’t leave Valencia without tasting some paella and having a glass of Agua de Valencia!

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? You can’t leave Valencia without tasting some paella. Not many people outside of Spain know this, but paella originated in Valencia and the Valencians are very proud of that! Tip: for the Spanish paella is a lunch dish because it’s too rich for dinner. So do as the locals do and have paella for lunch.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Valencia

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? The best thing you should do in Valencia is walk around the old town, visit the Central Market tiled with Goudi-style tiles, try some delicious local snacks, buy fresh seafood there and take it to the nearby restaurant behind the market, where they will cook the food you just bought for a low price. Absolutely unique experience!

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? The one drink you have to try in Valencia is not, as you might have thought, Sangria. No, it’s Agua de Valencia. Agua de Valencia is a cocktail made with Cava (Spanish Champagne), orange juice, vodka, gin and sugar. Try it, it’s sweet and delicious!

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Venice

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? The best thing to do in Venice is get lost meandering down the labyrinth of alleyways, walking across bridges and taking photos of canal boats and ancient buildings, shopping for leather and glass, then stopping at an outdoor bar, sitting under an umbrella and just people watching over a chilled glass of local wine.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Italian food is sublimely good. In 3 weeks I didn't have the same meal twice! Start with a caprese salad of fresh tomatoes sliced with buffalo mozzarella and sprinkled with excellent quality olive oil and aged balsamic, then look for a plate of handmade ravioli filled with seafood. A prosecco or local white wine will work perfectly.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Venice

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Go inside the Bridge of Sighs - most people stare at it from outside but that misses the point. The bridge is named because prisoners inside the Doge Palace would walk through the interior of the bridge on the way to their execution in St Mark’s Square. Looking out through the tiny lattice gaps, prisoners had their last view of Venice before they died. And that last view is believed to have induced a final sigh at Venice’s beauty. Hence: the Bridge of Sighs.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? Most people don't know that the Prosecco region is only an hour away from Venice by train. Of course, you can taste Italy's famous fizz in Venice but if you have a day to spare, hop on the train and go tasting in the nearby Prosecco hills. The Prosecco is premium, the views are superlative and the food far superior to anything you'll find in the centre of Venice.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

York

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? York is my favourite city in the world. It’s where I was born and always come back to no matter how far I travel. It’s full of historic and beautiful buildings from the Gothic cathedral, York Minster to Clifford’s Tower, a castle on a mound in the centre of the city. Some buildings date back as far as the Romans and we have a great deal of medieval houses in the city too. The city is small, the locals are friendly and there is so much to see and do. At Christmas the city lights up and you could believe yourself on a Dickensian street about to bump into Tiny Tim himself. Make sure you walk the Bar Walls that surround the city for unique and private views that you just don’t get anywhere else. If you get chance, take time to reflect and enjoy an afternoon tea in Betty’s famous tearooms.

What’s your favourite city in the world?

Zurich

What’s the number ONE thing you recommend people do when they get there and why? Explore the ancient cobbled streets and alleyways either side of the River Limmat for great views and a taste of the old town - they're full of quirky and unusual shops and restaurants too.

What local food and drink do people HAVE to try there? It has to be fondue! And few people beyond its borders know that Swiss wine is a real find. Try the wines from the canton of Valais or from the UNESCO vineyards along the shores of Lake Geneva for starters...

Interesting how all of these cities are located in Europe. Does anyone travel anywhere else???????

Frankie Elder

Just noticed the last comment...most all the comments are on places in Europe . What about travels by women to India, Africa, Indonesia, China?

Gilles Lefevre

Paris, yes, by all means - but I am biased; Not only am I french but I lived and worked there for several years under widely varying circumstances (still go there about once a year) but - more importantly - I was a gopher (messenger) there and not only do I know the town so very intimately but even now I still discover gems around many of the corners. Such a delightful city and delightful people (if you treat them respectfully). The rest of France ain't too shabby either!
