Detailed Description

Enjoy a 3 hour of Mou Waho Island tour, the meeting point with your guide will be at 10:00 AM or 2:00 PM at Wanaka Marina.

You will travel in a comfortable water taxi 15 km by the lake, enjoying the views of the Harris and Buchannan mountains while your guide will explain some of the history and the fascinating geology of this impressive place. After disembarking at the small jetty on the island, you will have 1.5 hours to enjoy this special place. You will walk for 20 minutes and you will take to the hidden lake, created by the glacial action thousands of years ago when great glaciers filled the valley. On the top of Mou Waho Island is Tyrwhitt Peak where you can see two lakes the Lake Wanaka and the Arethusa Pool.

This is a natural reserve free of predators with an interesting and diverse bird life. You can see birds like: Kereru (Pigeon torcaz) Korimaka (Bell Bird), Tomtits and Weka, this last bird the Weka, disappeared from the continent in the 1920s and was introduced to the islands as part of a breeding program in 2002. They are charismatic birds that are often attracted to human activity which makes the encounter with this bird frequent and impressive for many visitors to the island.

You will also visit the small protected beach near the jetty which is a great place to relax after your walk or cool off on those warm and dry Wanaka days, with a dip in the twisting waters of Lake Wanaka. After living this unique experience you will be returned to the same place where you started.
