Detailed Description

On this trip full of adventure, you will be picked up at your hotel in Te Anau by your guide in a minivan at 8:00 AM. Your trip begins with a spectacular scenic drive along Milford Road to Lower Hollyford which is the starting point for the guided walk to Lake Marian.

Along the way there are opportunities for short nature walks and photo stops. The hike starts smoothly next to a spectacular series of waterfalls, then becomes steeper and becomes quite rocky under your feet as you ascend through a lush forest of fuchsia, wooden slats and beeches.

While you walk your friendly guide Trips and Tramps will share information and stories about the natural and human heritage of Fiordland. You will have time to take pictures, observe birds and enjoy the scenery regularly along the way to ensure a pleasant and easy climb. Hot drinks and energy snacks are taken by the guide, and there will be a break for tea.

After walking approximately 3 hours, you will arrive at Lake Marian, your impressive alpine destination. This beautiful lake is surrounded by a hanging valley bordered by steep snow-capped mountains. If the weather permits, you will enjoy a picnic lunch and relax in this magnificent alpine amphitheater. Then to finish you will return to Hollyford Road and then to Te Anau in the same place where you started around 5:30 PM.

  1. Where do your tours depart from?

Our Milford Sound tours and guided walks (except Milford Track) depart from the Te Anau township. Accommodation pickups within the town boundaries are available if details are provided. Alternatively, our central pick up is the Real Journeys office, Lakefront Drive. The exception is our Milford Track 1/2 day guided walk which departs from Milford Sound and you will need to make your own way there.

  2. Why the early starts in Summer?

Yes, we do like to leave fairly early in the morning, and you are on holiday but we do so for a very good reason! We wish to maximize the quality of your day by avoiding the midday crowds at Milford Sound and making the most of the calmer morning weather conditions. Every fine, sunny day during summer months results in a strong day breeze developing mid to late morning which causes the fiord to chop up. Our early starts making the most of the calmer water conditions for excellent photo opportunities and brilliant wildlife observing.

  3. What trip should I choose to suit my motivations and fitness?

We offer a variety of trips to suit everybody of all ages, including family groups. Take a look at the photos and choose the one that appeals to you and if you cannot decide if it will be suitable, don't hesitate to contact us.
