Detailed Description

This 4 hour tour begins once you meet one of your guides, either at the Wanaka I-site or directly at the door of your Hotel. From there, it will be a quick trip in a minivan to the river, which is the starting point for this adventure by kayak down the river.

Once you get to your starting point, you have to put on your safety equipment and you will receive a quick class on how to use the kayak and once you are ready you will get on the water. Your professional guide will give you a lot of information on how to travel down the river safely and effectively. Along the way, they will give you many options on where to go to find the right level of challenge for you. It's a bit of "choose your own adventure", you can take the smooth "cruise line" in the rapids.

Prepare to be very wet: almost everyone will swim, sometimes even intentionally. You must maintain your energy, then there will be a stop for a picnic with drinks and brownies. After 22 kilometers and a couple of hours of fun in the rapids, you will arrive at the stop and you will find your transport. You can change your clothes while the boats load in the trailer again, then you will get into the minivan to take you back to the same place where you were picked up.

  1. What should I wear?

You will want to wear swimwear or something that you don’t mind getting wet. Jeans or anything cotton is not great. If it is cold we will give you a wetsuit and splash jacket to wear over your swimwear.

  2. Do I need to be experienced?

This is a great trip for those who have kayaked a couple of times before, or if you are pretty fit and enthusiastic. This is not a good trip for those who have never kayaked before and are potentially nervous about it. The Tiki Tour is a great option instead for anyone who wants to try kayaking for the first time.

  3. Do I need to be able to swim?

On this trip you are much more likely to fall in, so being able to swim will make you much more comfortable. Non-swimmers will likely enjoy the Tiki Tour more as an alternative trip.

  4. Will I fall in?

The short answer: probably! Taking a “swim” is all part of the fun! Your guide will teach you how to self-rescue before you get on the water, and will be nearby if you do tip out and need extra assistance. All guides are trained in swift water rescue and have done hundreds of rescues in their time.

  5. Will I get wet?

    Definitely.

  6. What about the weather?

Kayak the Mighty Clutha runs rain or shine! If its chilly out we’ll give you some extra thermal layers to keep you nice and toasty!
